You know the feeling. You hang up the call, close the laptop, and there it is- that low-grade pit in your stomach. You tell yourself she probably wasn't ready. Maybe the timing was off. Maybe your price was too high. Maybe she just needed more time to think about it.

But somewhere in the back of your mind, you already knew. She wasn't going to sign. You lost her somewhere in that conversation- you just couldn't pinpoint exactly where.

Here's where it actually happened.

The sale isn't lost when she says she needs to think about it

It's lost the moment you stop reading her and start making accommodations for her.

Here's what that looks like in real life. Your potential client asks: "So, what exactly would we be doing together?" It sounds like a simple question. But it's vague- she's not telling you what she actually wants or needs. And instead of asking a follow-up question to get clear, you hesitate. You run through a mental checklist of what she might want to hear. And then you start talking.

You over-explain your services. You justify your price before she's even reacted to it. You wrap it all up with a "Does that make sense?"- sometimes more than once in the same conversation.

Each one of those moments is a signal. Not to you- to her. She's reading you for certainty. And she's not finding it. If she can't find certainty in you as the person who's going to help her fix her health, she cannot feel confident handing over that decision- or that money.

This isn't a confidence problem. It's a training problem.

Holistic nutritionists are trained to be empathetic, to answer questions, to provide. That's what makes you a brilliant practitioner. But in a sales conversation, those same instincts work against you if you haven't been taught how to lead.

Nobody taught you in nutrition school how to structure a discovery call that actually converts- not just converts, but gets the right people into the right programs. The skill of leading a sales conversation while the client is still warm is something most HNs have never been given.

And the fix isn't becoming pushy. It's becoming clear.

The one question that changes everything

Before you talk price. Before you walk through your program structure. Before you mention logistics. Ask this one question and then stop talking.

“What have you already tried, and why do you think it hasn’t worked for you?”

That question does three things:

1.  It tells you exactly what she needs- without guessing.

2.  It positions you as someone who wants to understand her unique situation before selling to her- which immediately builds trust.

3.  It gives her the space to talk herself into the decision before you’ve said a single word about price, structure, or next steps.

This is the difference between a practitioner who chases clients and one who attracts them. When you ask the right question and actually listen to the full answer, you stop selling at her and start connecting with her. The conversation shifts. The energy shifts. And your close rate shifts.

What happens when you make this shift

You walk out of every discovery call knowing exactly what your client needs — because you asked. She walks away feeling genuinely heard, genuinely understood, and genuinely confident in your ability to lead her. The price becomes secondary. The logistics become secondary. Because the connection is already there.

This is a two-minute shift in your conversation. Not a personality overhaul. Not a script. One question, asked before anything else, followed by the discipline to actually listen to her full answer.

That version of you- the one who never leaves a discovery call with that pit in her stomach -is not far away.
